Maybe even ready to be done?
That’s how Candace felt when we started working together. The things she loved just all seemed to be too much, somehow. She didn’t mind creating social media posts, but they didn’t actually make her money. Booking clients and coaching clients brought in the dough. Afterall, she was a branding coach. Not only that, but she also had a husband and three kids she wanted to be deeply invested in.
She dreamed of a world where she could do both: make money coaching (which is what she loved), attend her kids’ soccer games, and chill with her husband on the weekend.
Sounds like the life, right?
When I told her it was within reach she smiled, but her laugh told me she didn’t believe it. In case you’re in the same boat, I’ll tell you what I told her:
“You are strong enough to take your business to the next level. And you deserve it. Your family deserves it. You might not feel like the smartest or most strategic chic in the room, but you are capable of it and you are worthy.”
That pep talk isn’t to say that the world you’re dreaming of won’t require change or risk. It’s to say there is a way and I’m here to show you how. Let’s get to it…
First of all, make a list of everything you do to run your business.
Accounting, social media management, vetting clients, discovery calls, networking meetings. Yes, all of it. Ask yourself, “How long can I make this list?” and go for it.
Secondly, you need to know what you do that ACTUALLY makes you money.
Now, go through that list you just made and circle everything that actually earns you money.
As a coach Candace made money when she was booking client or coaching clients. A social media manager makes money when managing social media profiles and getting new clients. An interior designer makes money designing a room and signing another property.
I’ve heard it said this way: Do the things ONLY you can do. Aka your “zone of genius”.
Doing ONLY what you can do increases profitability in many way, but here’s a few:
INCREASE YOUR VALUE: If you’re only doing one thing you’re going to improve, which will result in an increase of value, which often means you can increase your rates.
INCREASE REVENUE: When you’re only doing what earns you money you’re gonna make more money.
INCREASE REVENUE STREAMS: If you’re a coach, chances are you’ve considered creating a course or having group coaching sessions. When you’re outsourcing the parts of your business that don’t directly make you money and increasing the hours you make money you’ll find the time to actualize those courses or back-of-the-mind ideas.
INCREASED EXCELLENCE: More often than not you’re hiring someone who is an expert in their field so they’re fast and working from a place of excellence (if finding an expert that suits you feels overwhelming that’s what we’re excellent at so let’s talk).
After Candace and I walked through this process I had her highlight three things on her list:
the task that took her the most time
the task that she most disliked
the task she almost never got around to
Turns out creating social media captions got highlighted twice; once for taking the most time and again for being the task she never got around to.
Bet you guessed what she outsourced? Social Media.
In Candace’s situation each coaching hour was $250. Outsourcing one hour of social media marketing even if it cost her $50 would still allow her to earn $200. Better yet, instead of doing the admin work or scheduling facebook posts she could be on an additional coaching call. Adding to her team allowed Candace to make $200 more than before. Boom. Genius.
After just three months Candace was spending more time relaxing with her family, waking up excited to invest in her business, feeling inspired by the excellent content her new team member was creating, and watching her engagement on social media climb.
I want to leave you with this final thought: You can do this. You don’t have to end your day feeling uninspired, over extended, and wondering what happened to earning money doing what you love. Adding to your team can be intimidating, but have you imagined what it feels like to live this way for the next twelve months (I just picked a random number, there) especially when you know there’s a way out - even if it is a scary one?!
